As a plant chemical "diosmin is a flavone" is mainly found in citrus fruits.
This is a "semisynthetic" drug (modified hesperidin) and is often used as an "oral phlebotropic drug". It is used to treat venous disease, "chronic venous insufficiency", haemorrhoidal disease, and acute or chronic haemorrhoids (by reducing swelling inflammation).
Diosmin may also be applied to the treatment of swelling of the arms which follows breast cancer surgery, and to protect from liver toxicity.
Diosmin extends the vasoconstrictor effects of norepinephrine on the vein wall and therefore results in increased venous tone. It also reduces distensibility, stasis, and venous capacitance. This "reduces venous hyper pressure in patients suffering from" chronic venous insufficiency. The chemical is known to improve lymphatic drainage through the increase in the frequency and intensity of lymphatic contractions and by increasing the total number of functional lymphatic capillaries. When taken with hesperidin (another plant chemical), diosmin will decrease the diameter of the lymphatic capillaries and intralymphatic pressure.
When it pertains to microcirculation diosmin's benefits are mostly displayed in the reduction of capillary hyper permeability, in addition to the improvement of capillary resistance, since it protects the microcirculation from damaging processes.
Finally, diosmin is responsible for improvements (reduction) in the expression of endothelial adhesion molecules (ICAM1, VCAM1) and migration. It also blocks the adhesion and activation of leukocytes at the capillary level. All these benefits lead to a reduction in the release of inflammatory mediators, principally oxygen free radicals and prostaglandins (PGE2, PGF2a).
