According to researchers, the health properties of green tea can be associated with polyphenols chemicals that have a potential antioxidant quality. These polyphenols also give green tea its bitter flavour. The types of polyphenols found in most teas are categorised as catechins.
Green tea has six primary catechin compounds, namely gallocatechin, catechin, epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin, and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is most active catechin in green tea and the one most studied. In addition to the catechins, green tea contains alkaloids like theobromine, caffeine, and theophylline. These are responsible for the stimulant effects of green tea. It also has an amino acid, L-theanine, which has calming effects on the nervous system.
Atherosclerosis: The antioxidant properties of green tea have been proved to prevent atherosclerosis, especially coronary artery disease. Researchers believe that there are properties in green tea that reduce the risk of heart attack by lowering triglyceride and cholesterol levels.
High cholesterol: Green tea lowers total cholesterol and increases HDL cholesterol in both animals and people. An animal study revealed that polyphenols found in green tea could block the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine and also help in eliminating it.
Cancer: Early medical studies suggest that polyphenols found in tea, especially green tea, may play a significant role in cancer prevention. It is believed that the polyphenols help in killing cancerous cells and inhibiting their growth. Research that was carried out to compare people with and without bladder cancer revealed that women who drank black tea, as well as powdered green tea, had minimal chances of developing bladder cancer. Other cancer types that these polyphenols can help reduce are breast, prostate, pancreatic, ovarian, colorectal, lung, skin, and stomach cancers.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Green tea is believed to assist in reducing Crohn disease inflammations and ulcerative colitis. Individuals that suffer from these two types of IBDs are at high risk of colon cancer, and if there is proof that green tea is helpful for this cancer type, it will be useful to such people.
Diabetes: Blood sugar levels have been controlled over time using green tea. Animal studies have suggested that it can help in preventing the development of type 1 diabetes and reduce its progression once it has developed. Green tea may help regulate glucose levels in the body. Research also suggests that consuming green tea regularly may assist in managing type 2 diabetes.
Liver disease: Results from a population-based study have identified that men who drink 10 or more cups of green tea in a day have lower chances of developing liver problems. Green tea has an ability to protect liver damage resulting from substances that are toxic, like alcohol. Catechins in green tea have been shown to help in treating viral hepatitis which is a liver inflammation.
Weight loss: Clinical studies have suggested extracts from green tea may boost metabolism and assist in burning fats. A study revealed that a blend of green tea and caffeine increased weight loss in overweight and moderately obese people.

For instance; when treating high cholesterol, green tea extracts with 150-2500mg catechins can be taken in a single dose or two doses daily for 24 weeks; abnormal development of cervix cells can be treated with 200mg daily alongside a green tea ointment being applied twice in a week for 8-12 weeks; for high blood pressure, you boil 3g green tea in 150ml water and take it three times a day two hours after every meal for four weeks; for treatment of low blood pressure, 400mg of green tea is taken before lunch.
Side Effects: Green tea is safe if consumed as a drink in moderate amounts or when a green tea extract ointment is applied to the skin. When taken by mouth, green tea extract is safe if taken for up to two years or when applied to the skin as a short-term remedy. In some cases, green tea can lead to constipation and stomach upset. When taken in high doses, green tea can cause side effects because of the caffeine. The side effects can be both mild and severe and include vomiting, diarrhoea, sleeping problems, dizziness, headache, irritability, tremors, irregular heartbeat, heartburn, convulsions, ringing in the ears, nervousness, and confusion. Green tea also seems to reduce the rate of iron absorption from food.
