L-cysteine is an amino acid, biosynthesized in all mammals, that plays an important role in the molecular structures of proteins. L-cysteine is also one of the body's primary sources of sulphur. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are crucial in various biological processes.
Cysteine has antioxidant properties, in the form of tripeptide glutathione, as a result of thiols ability to undergo redox. Additionally, glutathione must be biosynthesised by amino acids, glycine, glutamic acid, and cysteine.
While it is believed to be manufactured by the human body in amounts sufficient to support body functions, there are individuals whose systems are not able to correctly produce l-cysteine due to the absence of the needed precursors, micronutrients, and other bioactive substances. Hence, supplementation is recommendable to people with symptoms of nutrient malabsorption to ensure healthy levels of l-cysteine in the body.
Liver and free radicals: all the processes in our body that require a change in the oxidation number of atoms are collectively called oxidation-reduction which at the same time give rise to oxygen species, including peroxides and free radicals. Reactive oxygen species are molecular entities that are in fact employed by the body as tools to fight against pathogens like bacteria, and other known microbes, including viruses. Also, the liver's exposure to alcohol increases releases of reactive oxygen species.
The body makes use of substances that deactivate the effects of free radicals and peroxides when the latter group has finished eradicating harmful stimuli, but our system fails to release these endogenous substances in times of distress when the body is not able to cope with the stress we experience every day. It happens when the body utilises the antioxidant properties of l-cysteine, among others. Supplementation enhances our defences against ageing free radicals and peroxides.
L-cysteine and acetaldehyde: the use of l-cysteine for healthy liver cells is mainly to fight against effects that may be caused by acetaldehyde in the human body. Acetaldehyde is toxic and destructive, being directly involved in the formation of free radicals.
We are subjected to the effects of acetaldehyde on a daily basis as our body produces alcohol in small amounts. While the liver recuperates fast, continued exposure to acetaldehyde results in liver damage, the reason why alcoholics ultimately develop diseases of the liver. L-cysteine reverses the damage brought on by alcohol by reducing the toxic effects of acetaldehyde.
Immune system: glutathione inhibits inflammation by producing leukotrienes which strengthen macrophages, the primary supporters of the immune system. With insufficient cysteine, infections may become prevalent due to a shortage of killer cells. Also, l-cysteine enhances the metabolism of lipids. It helps in building essential fatty acids in the body resulting in a protective production sheath of nerve system and cell membrane.
Enhance fertility: l-cysteine supplementation has been shown to lower damage to reactive oxygen species in semen. L-cysteine can inhibit inflammation of reproductive tissues and other organs. The anti-oxidant effects of glutamic and glutathione can alleviate inflammation and hence improve fertility.
Glutamic acid and glycine are in most cases present in the majority of Western diets but the availability of cysteine is limited, hence its supplementation which is available in 500mg capsule or tablet forms.
